What Are Core Muscles, Really?

What Are Core Muscles, Really?

When we hear the word core, most of us picture the tummy. But the truth is, the core is so much more than that. It’s a whole network of muscles—your abs, back, and even parts of your legs—all working together to keep your body stable, supported, and strong.

"It’s a whole network of muscles"

Injured back

I was reminded of just how important this is a few days ago when my teenage son, who is fit, strong, and loves sports, injured his back during PE. He had been playing rough with his friends, probably careless with his movements, and the next thing I knew, he was in pain. Suddenly, my sporty, active boy couldn’t do the simplest things: bending down to change his pants, sitting at the table to eat, even lying down comfortably on his bed. The pain was so sharp, I heard him scream.

As a mum, it was heartbreaking to watch. I did what mums do—massaged him with my “magic gel,” served his meals in bed, and gave him lots of tender care. Thankfully, because he’s young, he’s healing quickly. But it made me stop and think.

We often take our core muscles for granted. We assume that because we’re young, active, or “healthy enough,” we’ll be fine. But strength in our core isn’t just about sports or looking fit. It’s about being able to move freely, live independently, and age gracefully—something every single one of us is doing day by day.

This experience reminded me why I’m so passionate about keeping the core strong. Don’t wait for an injury or a wake-up call. Start now, even in small ways. Bit by bit, you’ll feel the difference—and you’ll be grateful for it in the years to come.

it’s personal"

Why I Love Hula Hooping: For me, hula hooping isn’t just a business—it’s personal. It’s one of the simplest, most joyful ways to build a strong core. Just 5 minutes a day of twirling works your abs, back, and waistline without feeling like hard exercise. That’s why I always say: don’t wait. Start hooping, keep your core strong, and let it carry you through every stage of life.
